Spelling

Spelling is taught to Year 3 and 4 using a scheme of work called Read, Write, Inc which is underpinned by phonics and taught with fast based short lessons three times a week.

Children in all year groups, complete a differentiated list of spellings in their log using the system ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’. Spelling is also taught and reinforced as part of spelling lessons which happen weekly for Years 5 & 6 and three times a week for Years 3&4.

In Years 5 and 6 a different scheme of work is used to teach spelling in a 40 minute lesson once a week and reinforced during English lessons.

Children who need extra support with spellings may have short phonics lessons in a small group or use a computer programme, Wordshark, three times a week in class.

Spelling homework is set in each year group to embed learning, practise dictionary skills, and to broaden vocabulary.  There are statutory spellings lists for years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 which can be practised at home. Children are expected, by the end of KS2, to spell all these words correctly if used in their writing. The statutory lists and spelling rules taught can be found by clicking here.

A useful App to download to practise spelling is ‘Spelling Shed’. For more information click here.
